SUMMARY:W3: UU History Workshop with Rev. Peter Newport
DESCRIPTION:Where did we come from? What are we? Where are we going?\n\nin
1897 Paul Gauguin\, during his sojourn in Tahiti\, painted a huge piece ca
lled Where did we come from? What are we? Where are we going? You can see
it in the Boston Museum of Art. There’s also a hymn by that name in our
hymn book. We sing it with some regularity. It has always puzzled me how w
e seem to enjoy its wan existential message\, the more so since we do know
where we come from\, biologically\, historically and theologically anyway
\; we are just careless with that memory\, preferring instead a salutary n
arrative that hides more than it reveals. So I’m offering a three-part U
nitarian history workshop I’m calling W3 as a corrective… and to follo
w up on my Veteran’s Day sermon\, Five Easy Pieces on Why We Are Not a P
 eace Church.\n\nSession 1\, Where Did We Come From?\, Sunday April 16\, 12
:30 to 2:00 pm in the Parlors\, will provide a brief orientation to the Pr
otestant Reformation 1517-1648\; a “family tree” of Protestant denomin
ations\; and an introduction to the Minor Reformed Church of Poland\, a no
n-Trinitarian Protestant denomination\, also known as the Polish Brethren\
, that is a direct ancestor of modern Unitarian Universalism.\n\nPlease fi
nd the full event listing and registration here.
